The Alabama Crimson Tide, or “Bama,” football team is one of the strongest teams in NCAA football that competes in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference. With hundreds of top players in the NFL coming out of this team, it’s no wonder the Crimson Tide has a solid and passionate fanbase and multiple Heisman Trophy winners in their ranks (including Mark Ingram, Jr., and Derrick Henry). Their rivals are the Auburn Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers football teams. They play the tigers in the Iron Bowl each year.
With a winning track record and a slew of championship titles, the Crimson Tide is a team you don’t want to miss.
Alabama Crimson Tide: History and Regular Seasons
The Alabama Crimson Tide played their first game in Birmingham in 1892, but it was a far cry from the kind of game fans expect today. The opposing team was picked by a professor, drawing students from a nearby high school. The Crimson Tide team formed shortly afterward, losing by one point and forming a rivalry with an opposing college team.
Even though they showed promise, the Crimson Tide didn’t gain the national spotlight until 1922 in a game against the University of Pennsylvania. With their new head coach Wallas Wade, the team went to the Rose Bowl, defeating Washington 20-19, establishing themselves as a formidable team. The name Crimson Tide didn’t stick until after sports editor for the Birmingham News Zipp Newman coined the term.
Since then, Alabama quickly set itself up as a matchup for one of the consistently top teams like Texas A&M and Florida State, taking the number one spot as the best football college team for over 150 years. Trailing them at the number one and two spots are Notre Dame and Ohio State.
Where Does Alabama Play Their Home Games?
The Alabama Crimson Tide plays at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Their first game at the Bryant-Denny stadium was the same year it opened in 1929 against Mississippi. The first time they packed the stadium at its more than 100,000 seating capacity was in 2010.
With 100,000 seats, you want to get ahead in figuring out the seating, so you have no trouble navigating the stadium when you get there. Because of Alabama’s fame, the stadium is one of the most prominent sports venues.
Notable Alabama Home Games and Away Games
1926 Rose Bowl: Considered the single most important game for Southern football (and even called “the football game that changed the South” by many football historians), the Crimson Tide defeated the then-undefeated Washington Huskies 20-19 after falling behind in the first half. This was the first time a Southern team was invited to play in the Rose Bowl and established the team as a national powerhouse.
2018 at Georgia: One of the most notable games under coach Nick Saban, Alabama came back from a disappointing first half to wine 26-23 in overtime for the College Football Playoff national title. True freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw a 41-yard touchdown pass that Crimson fans will never forget.
2021 Goodyear Cotton Bowl: In the 86th classic at the AT&T Stadium, Alabama won the 2021 Goodyear Cotton Bowl when they defeated Cincinnati 27-6.
