A high-value soccer club, the Seattle Sounders got their start in Major Soccer League as a franchise in 2009. The football club dates back to 1974, when they played in the National American Soccer League as an expansion team.

The early Seattle Sounders played their first games in Memorial Stadium at the Seattle Center to crowds of more than 12,000 eager fans. Later, the Sounders received crowds of fans upwards of 20,000, which was more than some baseball and basketball games at the time.

The early Seattle Sounders made it to the National American Soccer League’s (NASL) championship games, the Soccer Bowl, twice but lost both times to the New York Cosmos. Their best season came in 1980 under coach Alan Hinton when the club broke league records with 25 games won.

The NASL went out of business in 1984, and the Sounders disbanded as a club. The Seattle Sounders only returned in the mid-1990s to play in the United Soccer League.

The announcement that the Seattle Sounders were set to become the 15th MLS franchise came in 2007. The Sounders played their first game as an MLS team in 2009 at Lumen Field. The New York Red Bulls vs. Seattle Sounders matchup brought in a crowd of more than 30,000 fans and saw the Sounders hand the Red Bulls a 3-0 defeat.

While the Sounders have a few notable coaches, Brian Schmetzer is at the very top. Schmetzer was one of 15 finalists for Coach of the World, which says a lot about the coach’s success with the Seattle Sounders FC.
