CF Montreal got its start in 1993, 19 years before it joined the MLS. In the team’s first season, they competed in the American Professional Soccer League. While their first season was not their best, with the team finishing last in the rankings, the team broke club records with their seven-game winning streak.

The winning streak propelled the team toward more success in the following seasons. In 1994, they defeated the Los Angeles Salsa in the playoffs, granting the team its first playoff win. Later, Montreal secured its first championship title in the APSL against the Colorado Foxes with a score of 1-0.

The CF Montreal quickly established themselves as a notable team in soccer, gaining an average of more than 5,000 fans in attendance per game. At the time, Montreal Impact games had the best attendance average in team history.

Continuing their strong play, the team won the Voyagers Cup and the Can-Am Cup in 2003. They won their first Canadian Championship ten years later.

The Canadian Eastern conference team changed its name from Impact to CF Montreal in 2021. Through 11 seasons, CF Montreal made it to the MLS Playoffs four times. Through several playoff wins, CF Montreal stands to add an MLS Cup title because they repeatedly show how strong their team is when they reach the playoffs.

It’s only a matter of time before CF Montreal starts getting major MLS Cup wins.

The Impact has many great athletes that helped bring in dozens of victories. Maximiliano Urruti and Lassi Lappalainen were the top scorers through 2019 and 2020. Other top scorers through 2022 include outfielder Romeo Quioto, Djordje Mihailovic, and outfielder Mason Toye.

Here are some of the best CF Montreal players in history:

• Eduardo Sebrango broke the club record in 2002 with 18 goals and 36 points in one season.
• Greg Sutton won Goalkeeper of the Year for his 0.73 Goals Against Average. Sutton also received all-star honors and MVP honors.
• Gabriel Gervais won the A-League Defender of the Year Award and received all-star honors.
• Marco Di Vaio was a strong athlete and was a runner-up to MVP in 2013 with 20 goals scored in 33 games.

Former DC United head coach Hernán Losada took the reigns at the head of CF Montreal at the end of 2022.

One of the most memorable Montreal games was a matchup that saw Montreal face off against Toronto FC in 2016. The rivals competed to be the first Canadian team to grab a spot in the MLS Cup Final. While the Impact had a solid lead, the Reds rallied with rapid-fire goals.

The Reds defeated the Impact 7-5.

Sports rivalries are the lifeblood of sports, and this is especially true of Canada’s biggest rivalry — CF Montreal and Toronto FC. Just when it looks like CF Montreal will beat Toronto to compete for the MLS Cup, Toronto levels Montreal with some hefty defeats. This doesn’t mean that Montreal never wins, though. This makes this rivalry even more entertaining, with fans of both teams sitting on the edges of their seats come game day. In 2022, Toronto defeated Montreal in another bid for the Canadian Championship.

Meanwhile, CF Montreal won a comeback victory 4-3 against Toronto in the Canadian Classique in 2022. Though TFC is one of the top Canadian teams in the MLS with plenty of wins under their belt, CF Montreal doesn’t give in easily, making this the biggest soccer rivalry in Canada.

The Rochester Raging Rhinos are an old Montreal rival. Through the ‘90s and ‘00s, these teams met on the field many times, often to Montreal’s defeat — like in the 2002 playoffs, when the team lost to the Raging Rhinos for the third time.
